The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are set to feature an innovative new “action button” that can be customized for various functions. This button, discovered in the code of the latest iOS 17 beta by MacRumors, will replace the traditional dedicated mute switch. Unlike its predecessor, this new button will be fully customizable, allowing users to trigger the function of their choice.
Currently, nine customization options have been revealed, but more may be added before the official release of the iPhone 15 Pro:
- Enable and disable silent mode
- Use a shortcut
- Access accessibility options
- Launch the Camera app
- Turn the flashlight on and off
- Activate and deactivate Focus mode
- Turn the Magnifier on and off
- Launch Translation
- Open the Voice Memos app to record a voice note
It is yet to be specified whether the button will be able to perform multiple actions based on different types of presses (short press, long press, double press, etc.). However, it seems unlikely that Apple would settle for just one function for this new button.
This action button is reminiscent of those found on some Android smartphones, such as OnePlus’ Alert Slider. In the past, it was common on Android to customize a dedicated button to perform actions without unlocking the phone. While this trend has faded, some manufacturers still offer a dedicated power button as an action button.
In addition, there are rumors that the iPhone 15 models could be the first from Apple to adopt a USB-C port for charging and data transfer. Although attempts have been made to integrate physical buttons into the chassis, technical constraints have delayed this innovation, which might eventually arrive next year with the iPhone 16.
